Art Program & Curriculum

October 20, 2009

We have completed 6 weeks of painting which was our first art curriculum block as recommended by our art committee. This first three weeks we proceeded through a series of explorative processes with watercolor as a painting medium. These three weeks were led by Alison and assisted by Catherine, Demry and Melanie. The next three weeks the children were led in process painting as a style of artistic expression employing themes that urged them to tune into their emotional states. These three weeks were led by Catherine and Eva and assisted by Demry, Melanie and Melanye.

Our next art block chosen by our art committee members in Fiber.  We began today by starting a sewing project. The intention with this project is to lay down some basic techniques and skills in working with fabric and then to move into some more experimental, student activated projects. Any and all suggestions are welcomed by parents to be discussed by members of our committee for study concepts or projects.

Today was the first day that classes were taught in our new studio.  We began with a sewing project.  All students will be making an art apron to wear while working in the studio.  Both the second graders and the fourth graders seem to really enjoy the project so far. Melanye and Juliette volunteered and their contribution was so much appreciated.

The point of this project is to not only provide clothing protection while in the studio but also to initiate the studio process on a strong ”proper use and methods” note.  I am hoping a hook rack for all the aprons can be attached to the wall just behind the door.  In this way the students can put their aprons on as soon as they come into the studio.

The children are hand sewing their aprons with needle and thread.  The design is simple and relies mostly on straight stitching seams on the inside so that when turned to the outside smooth unraveling edges should result.  Eventually each apron will don the name of its creator and wearer. Melanye and I spoke about bringing in some embellishment that children can use to personalize their apron if they desire to do so.  A few 4th graders asked about sewing on pockets which we will also help provide to those who wish them.

If your child has never sewn before this skill will come in handy for Halloween costumes and other seasonal crafts.

I will include pictures later of the kids in their aprons but in the meantime here is a rough diagram of what we will be creating.
